HARMONY

Last Sunday I was part of the MLK Peace Day celebration.  It was an evening of revelation, camaraderie, cultural exchange, entertainment, great food and an intense feeling of hopefulness.  I think that it would be safe to say that those of us in attendance would love to have gatherings such as these on a regular basis if it didn’t take so much time, energy and organization to pull it off.  Neighbors and friends used to gather regularly in decades past for any occasion or no occasion at all and I believe that was the glue that held everyone together.  When you spend time getting to really know your neighbors and the community around you, you are less apt to criticize and judge and more open to keeping the doors of healthy dialogue open.  We learned in the womb about civic duty and the responsibilities and obligations that were wrapped around it, but most importantly we watched our mentors make mistakes, own them and somehow recover and move on in their quest to contribute.  I played a very small part in the Peace Day festivities … in fact I can only claim to have created a few displays reflecting my own personal thoughts about harmony, our losses in its absence and the tragedy that envelopes us when it fails.  One such poster is displayed here and genuinely reflects my train of thought taken from our own headlines.   Peace to all in 2012.
